Netflix Bought Chinese Sci-Fi Movie 'The Wandering Earth'

Netflix has garnered a reputation for purchasing movies that look like worthwhile watches, though their track record can be pretty hit or miss. While the shows under Netflix's banner have mostly been positive, the movies have garnered a mixed reaction, though a number of them were watched by millions. Movies like Bright are getting a sequel so it's no surprise that the company would take interest in a Chinese sci-fi movie like The Wandering Earth.

According to Business Insider, The Wandering Earth has already made $610 million in China so it's easy to see why Netflix would be interested in the movie. If the film can rake in this amount of views, then it would be a win for the streaming service and more proof that Netflix is top tier.

Directed by Frant Gwo, The Wandering Earth is currently the second highest-grossing movie in China, the first being 2017's Wolf Warrior 2. That's fairly impressive and Netflix can only hope that the revenue they take in is that much from all of the streaming. With China being the country that these blockbuster movies want to impress, it's no surprise that the service would want to get a movie like this.

Netflix has wanted to increase its worldwide appeal for a while now, getting several Asian shows along with a number of Japanese anime that will be exclusive to the service.
