Squid Game Season 2 finally got an update this month but some people were not happy about the cast announcement. Netflix has since addressed the backlash to the second season's all-male cast.
Netflix Assures Squid Game Season 2 Will Announce More Cast Members
The cast announcement video for Squid Game Season 2 was shared during TUDUM 2023 and it confirms the return of Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo.
In addition to that, it was revealed that Yim Si-wan (Emergency Declaration), Kang Ha-neul (The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure), Park Sung-hoon (The Glory), and Yang Dong-geun (Connect) will join the show's second season.
It's an impressive cast but people were quick to note that the confirmed cast members were all male. Needless to say, fans began calling for female actors to be added to Squid Game Season 2.
Netflix has since addressed the backlash to the all-male cast. A spokesperson for the streamer told Insider that more cast members will be announced in the future.
"This was the first cast announcement for Squid Game Season 2. We're excited to share more casting news soon, which will include the leading female characters," the spokesperson said.
Fans were understandably disappointed to learn that Jung Ho-yeon will not be returning in the second season. In the first season, Jung played Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector who joined the game to pay a broker to rescue her parents across the border.
Kang Sae-byeok was killed in the first season but Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously teased Jung Ho-yeon's possible return. Hwang even went as far as suggesting some outrageous ideas just to bring back the model-turned-actor to the series.
Squid Game Season 2 has not yet been given an official release date. However, the series is set to return on Netflix in 2024. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
