Neill Blomkamp Wants Peter Weller to Come Back for Robocop Returns

The Robocop reboot didn't come out so well back in 2014, and it looks like MGM has decided to go the reboot/sequel route for the franchise. Neill Blomkamp is set to direct Robocop Returns, and he's said that he wants original actor Peter Weller to come back and reprise the role.

When asked by a fan on Twitter who he wants to cast as Robocop, Blomkamp replied:

We don't know much about this sequel yet, but it's said to be a direct sequel to the original. The story was actually written by original scribes Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, and is undergoing a rewrite from Justin Rhodes who also did the script for the new Terminator film.

If this film was ever supposed to be a follow-up to the original, I think it would make sense to have Weller return and reprise one of his most iconic roles. Then again, at 71 years-old, I'm expecting him to just be more of a cameo. We can't expect him to run around and fight crime forever like a real Robocop.

No release date has been set for Robocop Returns yet, but if things go out smoothly with pre-production, we could be looking at a release sometime in 2020.
