Ncuti Gatwa Kept Doctor Who Casting a Secret From Barbie Co-Stars

It has already been confirmed that Ncuti Gatwa will be the next incarnation of the Time Lord in Doctor Who. However, the BBC series isn't the only big project that the Sex Education actor is working on. Gatwa has been confirmed for the Barbie movie but he never told his co-stars in the film about his other project until it was officially announced!

Simu Liu is one of Ncuti Gatwa's co-stars in the Barbie movie along with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. During an interview with Variety, the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor told Jessica Henwick that the Barbie cast only learned about Gatwa's casting through the news although Gatwa already got the part a long time ago.

"[He] didn't tell anyone a thing. And then all of a sudden over the weekend he was announced. We came into work on Monday we were like 'Dude, how long have you been holding this in for?' And he's like, 'Two months!'" Liu said.

It's amazing to know that Ncuti Gatwa could keep such a huge secret for a long time. After all, anyone would be excited to be chosen as the Fourteenth Doctor in Doctor Who. However, that doesn't mean that Gatwa isn't excited to join the franchise.

"There aren't quite the words to describe how I'm feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show mean so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care," Gatwa said in a statement.

"I will endeavour my utmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor's metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show," he continued.

Ncuti Gatwa is expected to debut when Jodie Whittaker's Time Lord regenerates in the upcoming Doctor Who special later this year.
