Doctor Who: Matt Smith Says Ncuti Gatwa Will be a 'Brilliant' Doctor

The new Doctor was announced last week and it looks like the former Doctors are happy to welcome Ncuti Gatwa as the 14th incarnation of the Time Lord. The latest Doctor to share his thoughts on the Sex Education star's casting is Matt Smith, who says that Gatwa is going to be a "brilliant" version of the Time Lord in Doctor Who!

Matt Smith recently attended the Paris Fan Festival where he was asked about Ncuti Gatwa's casting in Doctor Who. Not surprisingly, the Morbius star admitted that he was excited about the Fourteenth Doctor and is firmly supporting the Sex Education actor.

“I think he’s going to be brilliant,” Smith said. “I think he’s going to be truly brilliant.”

He then added that Gatwa is going to get a lot of help from returning showrunner Russell T. Davies and he believes the two will work perfectly together.

“I think it’s an inspired piece of casting, and along with Russell, who’s such a great leader of that show. I don’t know if you’ve seen him in Sex Education, there’s a warmth and wit and a real depth to his talent that I think… honestly, I think it’s an inspired bit of casting and I’m really, really excited for the show,” Smith said.

Matt Smith isn't the only former Doctor who is excited about Gatwa's casting. Peter Capaldi also hyped up the Scottish actor's incarnation of the Time Lord, mentioning Gatwa's impressive history and that he "will make an amazing Doctor."

For now, we have yet to see Gatwa's official look as the Time Lord on Doctor Who. In the meantime, Matt Smith has taken a leap to Westeros and will star in the highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. The HBO show will premiere on August 21, 2022.
