Naughty Dog Director Impressed with Uncharted Movie

Sony seems to want to bank on the popularity of their new Spider-Man and has cast Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie. Though some may scoff at the concept, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann is actually pretty impressed with what director Shawn Levy is bringing to the project.

At the DICE Summit 2018 (via ScreenRant), Druckmann said:

"The Uncharted movie, yeah, we've had some conversations with Shawn Levy. And he's really passionate, gets it, and I think he understands where we're at. We've kind of evolved our feelings towards these kind of adaptations over the years. We used to just be excited, ‘Oh, my god, movies are looking at us. There could be an Uncharted movie on the screen.' And then as more time passes on, we're not excited about a direct adaptation of the story we told, because we feel like we've already told that story very well, cinematically, so I don't know what else you could bring to it. … [Shawn Levy] wanting to tell a different story than the main four adventures – with potentially a young Nathan Drake, that fills in the gaps – I think is a lot more interesting than trying to retell Uncharted1, 2, 3, and 4."

Druckmann seems to be adamant about keeping video game stories as they are. He's also expressed distaste for adapting The Last of Us into a movie. As someone who personally loves both games and movies, I think the biggest flaw is that movies will never be able to adapt the same level of immersion that players love from the games—that's why movies have a hard time feeling ‘faithful' to the source material.

With Druckmann happy with what Levy has to bring, I can't wait to get our first look at the Uncharted film. After years in development hell, the project is finally moving forward, and hopefully, it manages to break the ‘video game movie curse'. After all, Levy has done some amazing work with Stranger Things. He should be able to work some magic with Uncharted.

No release date has been announced for the Uncharted movie.
