Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Producer Rewriting Uncharted Script; Will be an Origin Story Set Outside the Games

Thanks to Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now, and a huge chunk of interest for the Uncharted film currently exists because Holland is playing a young Nathan Drake. According to one of the producers, the movie is currently undergoing a rewrite by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Rafe Judkins.

Talking to Deadline, DCEU producer Charles Roven, who is also producing Uncharted, talks about the movie's current status:

"We've come up with a wonderful origin story but it's still based on the Uncharted video game. It doesn't take place during any of the time periods of any of the Uncharted video games. It actually takes place when Nathan Drake and Sully, I guess you'd call him his surrogate father, were much younger. It's an origin story that evolves out of the game but is not from the game. Shawn Levy is going to be directing it and a young writer Rafe Judkins is currently writing the screenplay."

Judkins will be working on a script that was originally completed by Joe Carnahan; and the film will be directed by Night at the Museum and Stranger Things' Shawn Levy. What's more, the movie is said to eyeing Bryan Cranston to play the role of Drake's mentor Sully.

Knowing how these video game movies go, I'm not expecting Uncharted to be the next ‘masterpiece' of a film. I think the issue is that movies can never offer the same level of immersion that video games have, and stories that take hours to complete have to be shrunk down to less than half the time. Every fan always has their fingers crossed that Hollywood will eventually find the right formula for a video game movie.

No release date has been announced for the Uncharted movie.
