MyAnimeList Hacked Serial Experiments Lain

MyAnimeList recently went offline after the website got hacked. The site acknowledged the recent cyberattack some hours after fans noticed the unusual changes on the website.

For most anime and manga fans outside Japan, MyAnimeList is one of the premier sources of information, including reviews, cast details, and more.

It is also a major discussion platform among fans as its long-running forum continues to get a lot of engagement, especially for new series.

Given this, it’s no surprise that the hack was spotted quickly yesterday.

As fans were browsing the site yesterday, some noticed something peculiar happening to the site. Specifically, all the manga and anime titles on the site were changed to “LET’S ALL LOVE LAIN.”

As soon as this happened, anime fans took to Twitter to share screenshots of the hacked site, with many saying that it’s quite a funny hack.

After all, a site getting hacked could have resulted in a more serious or inflammatory message being shared.

Instead, it seems that the hacker simply wants to promote Serial Experiments Lain.

While it’s a fairly old series, Serial Experiments Lain is a classic anime series that was released back in 1998. Moreover, it's a cyberpunk horror anime that’s considered to be one of the best in the genre.

The series follows Lain, an introverted junior high school student who lives an uneventful life.

Her circumstances soon change as a series of bizarre incidents begin happening around her.

In response to the hack, MyAnimeList took the site offline for emergency maintenance. During the maintenance, the site yielded the message above explaining that a repair is being made.

MyAnimeList shared an official statement regarding what happened via Twitter. There, they explained that a malicious individual rewrote the site’s database information.

Aside from changing the titles, scores were also changed, plus a JavaScript alert was inserted that displays a pop-up for users who visited the site during the hack.

After over a day since the site went down, MyAnimeList shared another statement confirming that the website will resume service on May 12, 2023.

This latest update was also shared on the site's official Twitter account. It revealed that the target date of the service's resumption is 8:00 PM PDT / 11:00 PM EDT today.

Earlier this season, MyAnimeList also made waves as Oshi no Ko temporarily became the top-rated anime of all time.

Though this was short-lived as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood regained its top spot soon after.
