Ms. Marvel Co-Creator Speaks Up on Kamala's Controversial Change of Powers

Ever since the very first trailer of Ms. Marvel dropped, Kamala Khan’s powers have been a controversial topic because it has been changed from the comic books to the series and with many fans concerned about it, the co-creator speaks up on the issue and assured that it was the “right move.”

Kamala Khan has an impressive power in the comic books. It all began when it was activated by the Terrigen Mist and she can body-morph. However, in the series, as seen in the trailers, her powers and its origins are retconned, coming from what seems to be ancient bands, possibly nega-bands.

Marvel’s big boss, Kevin Feige, himself, explained this change when he had a chat with Empire saying, “We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation. Kamala came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match.”

Even the co-creator of the character, Sana Amanat, herself, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, acknowledged the concern of the fans, "The powers do look different, which is very controversial. I know people are like, 'How dare you change the powers!' I know people are upset about it."

Sana Amanat assured everyone that this change in powers is the right move for Ms. Marvel, “As someone who’s probably one of the closest people to this character from the inception, and having spoken to Willow about this as well, I think Willow and I have always felt that this made sense. This was the right move because there are bigger stories to tell."

Kamala’s powers may not have originated the same way as that in the comics but there are traces of what she can do in the comics as compared to the ones everyone will be seeing in the series, Amanat said, "It’s really fun to give Kamala different kinds of powers that feel big in scope and cinematic in a different way. We can do a lot of fun things with her.”
