What Happened to Mothra in the Last MonsterVerse Movie?
In the Japanese films, Mothra fought against Godzilla before teaming up with him. In the 2019 MonsterVerse movie, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Mothra gave her dying energy to Godzilla so he could stand a chance against King Ghidorah.
This led fans to assume that the female kaiju died and was succeeded by her offspring.

So How is Mothra Alive in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?
In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Jia (played by Kaylee Hottle) learns that she is special. Out of the other Iwi, she has the power to awaken Mothra.
Before she learned this special ability, the Iwi had been using their powers to try and communicate with her. While they were able to get Godzilla and Kong to return to Hollow Earth to fight against the Skar King, they were unsuccessful with Mothra.
Thankfully, Jia was able to reawaken Mothra shortly after Kong and Godzilla rekindled their fight. With Mothra back, she manages to break up the fight between the two kaiju.

What Does Mothra's Resurrection Mean in Godzilla x Kong?
Now that Mothra is back, Godzilla, Kong, the Iwi, and Monarch are able to fight the Skar King.
Mothra's resurrection in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire proves that she is an ally of the kaiju as she helps defeat the antagonist in the film.
In the final fight, Mothra stays behind to fight off the Skar King's troops. Meanwhile, Godzilla and Kong chase Skar King through a portal.
With Mothra's return, there is lots of potential for the MonsterVerse to expand the franchise and hopefully include the female kaiju in a movie of her own.
