Mortal Kombat brings in a "sickeningly violent" film, as the director of the film himself, Simon McQuoid shared in a recently released featurette that it received an R-Rating making it unsuitable for children. As the directorial debut of McQuiod, he shared to EpicStream how his background in-game advertisements came in handy in directing a film based on such a legendary game.

Produced by James Wan, Todd Garner, and Bennett, the story follows an orphaned MMA fighter who knows nothing of his lineage, gets his life disrupted when Bi-Han/ Sub-Zero pursues him. With the help of Jax, he was instructed to search for Sonya Blade. He later arrives in Lord Raiden's sanctuary where he trains with Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Kano, to prepare for the threat posed by the Outworld led by Shang-Tsung.
