Moon Knight Was Originally Going to Reference Kang the Conqueror

One of the elements that stood out in Moon Knight is how self-contained it is from the rest of the MCU and its minimal reference to the other films and TV shows in the franchise. But as it turns out, the earlier drafts of the series included a reference to Gorr the God Butcher, the potential appearance of the Eternals, and now, we are learning that there was originally going to be a reference to a Kang the Conqueror variant.

During an interview with The Direct, Moon Knight head writer and executive producer Jeremy Slater revealed that an earlier draft of the series was originally going to reference Rama-Tut, a variant of Kang the Conqueror, in one of Steven Grant's dialogues. However, as we all know, it didn't end up happening.

"There was a line in the script, and I don’t know if it survived. I can’t remember. But there was a line where, I think Steven, is sort of rattling off some Egyptian history that he has locked away in his brain, and he did mention Rama-Tut," he said. "I don’t remember if that scene, if that line is still in the show or not. But it was that small, it was him mentioning a list of famous pharaohs or something like that. But that was Nick Pepin, one of our executives at Marvel, that was his idea to sort of slip that in there as a fun Easter egg."

In case you're not familiar, Kang the Conqueror originally appeared as Rama-Tut when he faced off the Fantastic Four during his debut in 1963. Later on, the character was reinvented as Kang the Conqueror and became an Avenger villain a year later. Rama-Tut was Kang's original alias when he ruled ancient Egypt.

It is interesting to hear that they were going to do a reference to Kang the Conqueror in the series as some sort of easter egg which would have caught the ears of comic book fans if the line ended up making it in the series. While it would have been cool, it's still fine that the reference didn't end up happening since it's just a throwaway line that is an easter egg for fans and they could still make a reference to Rama-Tut in Kang the Conqueror's future appearances in the MCU.
