Miley Cyrus Slams Supergirl

Pop star Miley Cyrus has always been controversial, and she's stirring up even more controversy now by slamming the CW show Supergirl, Variety reports. She doesn't appear to have actually watched it though, and is doing so based entirely on the name. She bought it up while discussing gender equality in Hollywood.

When discussing the issue, Cyrus said, "for example, there's a show called Supergirl. I think having a show with a gender attached to it is weird. One, it's a woman on that f**king billboard — it's not a little girl." This is a point that was bought on the show itself (though admittedly not really resolved satisfactorily in everyone's view). The character was labeled "Supergirl" by reporter Cat Grant, who gave an awkward "girl is not a dirty word" speech to justify it.

Really, in the end, Supergirl is Supergirl because she was named that in the 1950s and DC wants to keep that brand regardless of what age Kara Zor-El happens to be in the story they're telling. Superwoman is an entirely different character in the comics, as the show executives pointed out when Supergirl first came out.

While Cyrus's first complaint about the show was at least logical, I can't understand her second complaint at all (then again, I don't understand a lot of what Miley Cyrus does). "Two, what if you're a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad? I think having a title like Supergirl doesn't give the power that people think it does."

I have no idea what Cyrus is getting at with the "little boy" question. Transgender girls exist so therefore it's bad to mention gender at all? That's the only argument I'm getting and that seems to be a really gross take on transgender issues, for one. Also, if it's somehow bad to give heroes gendered titles, why isn't Cyrus going after Superman too?

But those are just my thoughts. What's your take on Miley Cyrus's complaints? Do they make sense? Or are you as baffled as I am?
