Mike Mignola Talks About Hellboy Reboot Returning To The Comics

Hellboy fans might have been a bit worried about Neil Marshall's Hellboy reboot seeing how the project no longer involves Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman, but the unwilling Harbinger of the Apocalypse's comic book creator promises fans that they can count on the film to follow its source material very closely.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hellboy comic book creator Mike Mignola says that one of the key differences between del Toro and Marshall's movies is the way the reboot production works with him.

"It's funny, because my involvement has been very different than the Del Toro movies. The difference is I had known Del Toro for six years by the time we did the first movie. Neil I met a couple months before he worked on the movie. It was very different, but I have been involved ever since they said ‘Hey we're gonna make another Hellboy movie, and we're gonna do this story.' I've bounced back and forth with them about how to adapt this particular Hellboy story."

Del Toro's fans might have come to love his Hellboy films, but it seems like both movies didn't really pay close detail to the source material, the first being a loose adaptation of the comics and the second being a whole different imagining.

Now, in making the reboot, Marshall seems to strive to return to the dark universe imagined in Mignola's Hellboy comics.

"At various times I've jumped in and been much more active in the screenplay than I ever was on the Del Toro movies. But I did nothing so far as design stuff on the movie. Guillermo wanted me as a concept artist, but on this movie, there were other concept artists. I came in and I looked at some stuff, but they were trying to do something so close to what's on the comics that they really leaned on what had been done by Duncan [Fegredo] and me in the comics."

Guess Hellboy fans might have to expect a far different take from the Hellboy movies that their used to and prepare themselves for a darker and potentially R-rated reboot.

Hellboy makes its big premiere on Jan 11, 2019.
