Meghan Markle made a slew of shocking revelations in her and Prince Harry’s Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan. Even though it’s been weeks since the docuseries was released, some people are still talking about it, particularly the Duchess of Sussex’s controversial curtsy.
While talking about her first meeting with Queen Elizabeth, Meghan Markle revealed that she had no idea how to curtsy. She showed audiences how she curtsied to Her Majesty, which featured an exaggerated bow complete with her two arms outstretched.
According to the mom of two, Sarah Ferguson and Princess Eugenie witnessed her first curtsy to the queen, and they told her that she did well.
Meghan Markle’s Curtsy Joke In Harry & Meghan Not New?
But according to body language analyst Spidey, it’s unlikely for Markle to have shared her curtsy story for the first time in Harry & Meghan. He is convinced that the Duchess of Sussex already shared the story with her American friends, and it was a hit among them.
As such, Markle decided to tell the story again in Harry & Meghan with her American supporters in mind.
“This isn’t for the English people, this joke is only for Americans. And then she proceeds to mock something that is traditionally something that the British do — curtsy, bowing. This is something that shows respect,” he said (via Cheat Sheet).

Spidey also said that Markle seemed very confident while telling her curtsy story in the Netflix docuseries. Little did she know that Britons were offended by her exaggerated gesture.
“She’s told this joke before this way to American friends of hers and it hit, it landed well. And that’s why she’s presenting it with such confidence and saying, ‘This is for the Americans.’ To me, it just feels a little disrespectful to mock this tradition that’s so important… to your husband’s family,” he said.
Prince Harry Faked A Smile While Listening To Meghan Markle’s Curtsy Joke?
Spidey also described Markle’s curtsy joke as a kind of misplaced mockery because it evidently affected her husband, Prince Harry, who grew up following royal protocol.
“At first, he’s not smiling and you can’t really see the left side of his face, but you can almost feel that that left side [has a] contemptuous look. You kind of feel it in the way he’s looking at her. And then he kind of forces out like a smile but it’s not a genuine, happy ‘I find this funny’ smile. It’s kind of an awkward, tight-lipped kind of, ‘OK, let’s move on from this’ smile. I don’t think he’s loving this at all, nor should he,” he said.
