Meet a Soviet Kal-El in New Trailer for Superman: Red Son

While we may not have a Superman movie coming to the big screen in a while, WB Animation has pushed forward with an adaptation of Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar. A new trailer has been dropped for the movie, and it has everything you can expect from a DC animated film.

The new film features the voice talents of Jason Isaacs as Kal-El, Amy Acker as Lois Lane, Diedrich Bader as Lex Luthor, Phil Morris as James Olsen, Phil LaMarr as John Stewart, Vanessa Marshall as Wonder Woman, Sasha Roiz as Hal Jordan, Roger Craig Smith as Batman, Paul Williams as Braniac and William Salyers as Joseph Stalin.

If you're unfamiliar with Superman: Red Son, it's basically a telling of an alternate universe story where Kal-El lands in the Soviet Union rather than the US of A. He still becomes Superman, but instead of fighting for American values, he instead fights with Communist principles. Not only is Superman affected by this change, but other heroes as well. Red Son will give us alternate takes on Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman, Batman, Green Lantern, and many more beloved characters.

Red Son is one of my favorite books from Millar, and I have to say I really love his takes when it comes to alternate universes. If you look at the Marvel spectrum of things, Millar has worked on Old Man Logan, and he's also had a hand in making one of the biggest events ever in the form of Civil War. Not to mention he's also behind some other comic titles like Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Wanted.

While I would like these DC animated films to be a bit more stylized, I think they're good enough adaptations of classic comic storylines. While it feels like WB would never have the balls to give us a live-action Red Son film, at least we have something like the animated movies to give us these less commercial takes.

Superman: Red Son will come out sometime early 2020.
