MCU Concept Art Offers A Glimpse At Thor's Other Brother Balder Odinson

The dynamic between Thor and Loki is undoubtedly one of the best things about the Thor trilogy. However, it could have been a lot different if the Marvel Cinematic Universe decided to include their other brother in the films.

Charlie Wen has been sharing a lot of concept art on his Instagram account these days. The founder of Marvel Studios Visual Development was in charge with the art direction in Thor and recently revealed that the 2011 film almost had Balder Odinson, the Thunder God's half-brother. Check out Wen's gorgeous concept art of Balder below.

In the comic books, Balder was known as Balder the Brave and is based on the deity Baldr. A loyal ally to the god of thunder, he took over in ruling Asgard when Thor went on a mission to find the missing Odin.

Wen explained that Balder was written out of the script for the first Thor film after he created the character's preliminary keyframe. However, he is still hoping that Balder will reappear sometime in the future.

"Balder does add another layer of complexity to Thor's relationships with Loki, and it was probably a good idea to have him taken out of the first film, but if there was more time to weave out a longer story arc, and Thor had an HBO or Netflix saga, Balder would be a must!"

Balder might be an interesting addition to MCU now that Loki's tragic fate in Avengers: Infinity War. However, Odin had made no mention of the character and only addressed Hela as his first-born in Thor: Ragnarok. It seems unlikely that Balder will be set for a comeback in the future.

Thor returns in the still-untitled Avengers 4, which is scheduled for release on May 3, 2019.
