Matthew Lillard Disappointed Scooby Doo Reboot Didn’t Cast Him as Shaggy

Matthew Lillard is best known for playing Shaggy in the live-action Scooby Doo movies, but with the reboot announced, it's been revealed Will Forte will be voicing the role this time around. This apparently didn't sit well with fans, and Lillard has something to say about the movie snubbing him.

It's worth noting that ever since the films, Lillard has also been voicing Shaggy for the new animated shows. It's kind of weird how the movie would cast Frank Welker, who has been providing the voice of Scooby for years, and not bring Lillard along.

If anything, I'm sure the movie is casting big names as a way to draw in the audience for a theatrical release. Some people online have been pleading Will Forte to give the role up to Lillard, but we haven't heard anything from him so far.

There's a lot of support coming Lillard's way though, and even Tara Strong has shared that she's had the same experience with her characters getting recast for big releases. She didn't talk about anyone specific, but one character in mind is Harley Quinn from the LEGO Batman movie. Strong had been providing the voice for Harley for years, but the film had Jenny Slate voice Harley for the movie. They also had Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) take on the role for the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series.

Hopefully WB will decide on bringing Lillard back. He's put a lot of work into the character, and it would be insulting not to have him play it. Maybe Will Forte will change his mind if enough people ask for it.

The Scooby Doo animated reboot is set to come out May 2020.
