Mary Poppins Returns Clip Brings Us to the Animated World

The original Mary Poppins won an Oscar for its visual effects work, and it looks like Disney is planning to top itself with the sequel this coming December. The trailer promises us an animated sequence reminiscent of the first film, and we have a small clip from the film teasing the scene.

The clip basically has Lin-Manuel Miranda's character Jack goading Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) on stage to sing. As you can see, Blunt performs the character very close to Andrews; while she does seem strict and no-nonsense, Poppins can still have some fun.

While I would have loved to see at least some of Blunt's singing performance, Disney is keeping a very tight lid on the songs. If Mary Poppins was known for anything, it was the music, and that is one of the biggest draws for this movie. Of course, it's possible that they release the soundtrack before the film comes out, but it's possible that Disney would put a cap on it.

If anything, Mary Poppins Returns looks absolutely stunning, and I can't wait to see it in theaters. Blunt looks like she was perfectly cast, and the rest of the film also has a lot of great talent in the form of Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, and original cast member Dick Van Dyke.

The film is set in 1930s Depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers' additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children, and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep).

Mary Poppins Returns to theaters Dec. 19.
