Emily Blunt Could Get Best Actress Nomination for Mary Poppins Returns

It's some pretty big shoes to fill, but Emily Blunt is taking over for Julie Andrews with this December's Mary Poppins Returns. As it turns out, her performance is said to be gaining a lot of Oscar buzz that Blunt could be looking at an Oscar nomination soon.

This comes from The DisInsider's Skyler Shuler:

Of course, we should take this with a grain of salt until the actual nominees are announced, but I wouldn't be surprised if Blunt does end up getting a nomination for her work. Though she hasn't had any Oscar nominations, Blunt has already gotten nominated several times at the Golden Globes. She also won best supporting actress with Gideon's Daughter.

The sequel also has a lot to live up to when it comes to its predecessor. The original Poppins film won a total of five Oscars out of 13 nominations. It won best music, best original song, best special effects, best editing, and Andrews nabbed best actress.

It's also worth noting that Blunt isn't the only one who's getting buzz with a musical role. Rami Malek's performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody is said to be Oscar-worthy, but it's worth noting that Blunt did her actual singing for Poppins Returns.

In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

Mary Poppins Returns to theaters Dec. 19.
