Marvel's Spider-Man Artist Wanted the Character's Nipples to be 'Hot' but Not Distracting

Marvel's Spider-Man was a pretty great game and even convinced a couple of Marvel-loving Xbox One gamers to get a PlayStation 4. Aside from its fun open-world gameplay and a solid story, fans also appreciated the number of costumes that were in the game, which would always show in the cutscenes except for the last one. There are actually a lot of notable costumes in the game, from Tobey Macguire's movie outfit to comic book classics like Ends of the Earth but it was hard not to love boxers Spidey.

Playing as a half-naked Spider-Man wearing nothing but his boxers was fun since it made for such an odd visual but the artist who worked on, Xavier Coelho-Kostolny, said this was harder than it seemed. Mostly because he had to make sure that the nipples were "hot" but also not distracting, which is really funny to hear.

Stemming from a debate about nipples in games on Twitter, Coelho-Kostolny was eventually interviewed about it on Kotaku, where he delved into making Spider-Man's nipples. Yes, I just typed that sentence out loud.

"I absolutely took a good amount of time to consider what would make him, for lack of a better term, hot. Everything from how vascular his arms were to the placement of his underwear on his hips got some sort of special attention, and I'll admit I did all of it for the express purpose of adding a little beefcake to what is otherwise a pretty mild game in that regard. I mean, sure, an incredibly fit dude can be hot, or he can look like a weird vacuum-packed muscle monster."

While that's not a costume I personally use, the fact that Insomniac Games and Marvel were perfectly fine with a half-naked Spider-Man costume in Marvel's Spider-Man is pretty great. Straight dudes who might get mad at this have characters like Black Cat to look at anyway.

Marvel's Spider-Man is now available on PS4.
