Marvel's Spider-Man is easily one of the most popular video game titles of the last three years and it doesn't come as a surprise how Insomniac games is capitalizing big time on the hype surrounding it. Now, if you liked the original 2018 game and its follow-up Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales which is essentially the series' sequel, you haven't seen anything yet because the upcoming Spider-Man 2 video game already promises to be an even bigger offering than its predecessors.
If you've already seen the trailer for the upcoming release which premiered a couple of weeks back, it's pretty evident that the game will take a darker and grittier turn with the addition of iconic Spidey villain Venom voiced by Tony Todd. Marvel Games' Bill Rosemann is beyond excited for the game and even confidently said that it's basically The Empire Strikes Back of the series.
Appearing on the recent episode of the This Week In Marvel podcast (via ComicBook), Rosemann pretty much confirmed that Spider-Man 2 "gets a little darker". He also compared it to the legendary Star Wars film which has been the benchmark for sequels since its inception. Hyping up the game, he said: "If the first Spider-Man game was Star Wars, Spider-Man 2 is kind of our Empire."

The first two Spidey games under Insomniac performed extremely well and if we'll base it on momentum alone, Spider-Man 2 is definitely on the right track. Hopefully though, the game's developers will give fans something fresh because as good as the first two games actually are, the open-world gameplay can suffer from being too repetitive. But hey, at least they have things figured out, unlike the Avengers video game.
No official release date has been announced for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 but it's expected to drop sometime in 2023.
