Earlier this week, it was announced that the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is a PlayStation 4 exclusive in Marvel's Avengers. Speculations have long been running about the wall-crawler being a playable character in the game, with the head of combat Vince Napoli revealing that the character was actually a late addition to an already established roster.

In a recent interview with Games Radar, Napoli opens up about the late decision of including Spider-Man to the game. "We had a full roster already in progress of all the heroes we were going to release, plans for years in advance, and certainly all the ones we've currently got underway," he said. "And then we added Spider-Man as well."

Recalling the first time it was discussed, Napoli was surprised, thinking that it was only "for fun" or a joke at first. However, they were actually "serious," and the team went on to "think outside the box" to put Spider-Man into the "pre-existing schedule."

While Spider-Man is a late addition, he'll still be a fully-fleshed out character when he arrives at Marvel's Avengers on PlayStation next year. Napoli pointed out that "there's no shortchanging" anytime there's a new hero added. "There's no 'Let's just throw this one on the slab, get this one out quick or we'll redo a budget version of it.'"

Aside from Spider-Man, other Avengers will soon be available over the course of the game. The first hero revealed was Hawkeye, who actually has his own special missions in the game.

Marvel's Avengers will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC on September 4.
