It looks like Captain Marvel 2 has found its director!

Earlier this year, Marvel Studios hired WandaVision scribe Megan McDonnell to write the Captain Marvel sequel with Brie Larson set to return. Now, Deadline reports Nia DaCosta has closed a deal to direct the upcoming movie.

DaCosta previously directed Little Woods and has been generating quite some buzz thanks to her upcoming reboot of Candyman.

The filmmaker will take over directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck who helmed the first Captain Marvel movie. The outlet says that while Marvel Studios met with several candidates for the past couple of months, DaCosta "seemed to have the edge for some time."

This isn't the first time that the studio switched up its directors for their popular franchises, giving the hero's second outing a fresh voice. That said, the outlet revealed Marvel and Disney have yet to confirm the news and has declined to comment on the story.

Part of Marvel's push to for inclusion in top creative positions, DaCosta set to helm the second Captain Marvel film is certainly a healthy step towards that. She'll be the fourth woman to direct a Marvel Studios picture following Boden, Cate Shortland for Black Widow, and Chloe Zhao for The Eternals.

Captain Marvel 2 is currently slated to hit theaters on July 8, 2022.
