Marvel and DC Movies Lead Fandango's Top 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2022

We're now a few days away before we welcome the year 2022. While we're still grappling with the ongoing pandemic especially with the rising cases of the Omicron variant, a lot of fans are still hopeful and looking forward to the new year given the numerous films that are set to be released all throughout the year.

Recently, Fandango conducted a survey on more than 6,000 moviegoers to find out their most anticipated films of 2022. According to the results, here are the top 10 films that they're looking forward to seeing next year:

  1. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  2. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)
  3. The Batman
  4. Thor: Love and Thunder
  5. Jurassic World: Dominion
  6. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  7. Avatar 2
  8. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

As you can see, comic book movies from Marvel and DC dominated the list with six films while the rest are sequels, but all of them are tentpole films. Of course, the most notable entry is the number one film on the list, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2018's Black Panther. There are several reasons that we can point out why it topped the list and we can pretty much say that one of them is the audience's curiosity on what the film will look like after Chadwick Boseman's death and who will take the Black Panther mantle.

It's also worth noting that all MCU theatrical films were able to make it on the list which just shows that people are still excited to see a new movie from the franchise. However, it is interesting that there were only two DC films on the list as they have five on the slate next year including the long-awaited Black Adam and the multiversal film The Flash, but both of them were absent on the top 10.

The rest of the list includes the highly-anticipated Jurassic World: Dominion which will culminate the trilogy and feature the return of the original Jurassic Park trio, the long-awaited Avatar 2 which will finally be released 13 years after the first film, and the action films Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 both starring Tom Cruise.

While the list doesn't necessarily indicate which films will do very well at the box office, it does show us the films that are on the general audience's radar. Of course, it all comes down to the reviews, marketing, and word-of-mouth to see if the films will hold out to the audience during their release.

Hopefully, all of those films will be great and do well enough at the box office as the theatrical market is still recovering from the ramifications of the pandemic. If Spider-Man: No Way Home's impressive box office record is an indication, there is still hope for the future of the theatrical business.
