Martin Scorsese Calls Marvel Movies 'A New Art Form' but Doubles Down on Amusement Park Comparisons

Marvel movies have been the target of many an old-timey director, with Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Copella ripping on them. Scorsese was arguably nicer than Copella but was still insulting, claiming that these moves aren't cinema and comparing them to theme park rides. While his criticisms are valid since he wants movies that challenge people to have a place in theaters, saying Marvel movies "aren't cinema" is still a bit too much.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Scorsese maintains his stance that they are theme park ride movies but does call Marvel movies "a new art form." Scorsese tries to maintain that his theme park films analogy isn't that bad, admitting that they entertain families and children but feel that cinemas should still be home to films that can challenge people psychologically, even if they're always about angry Irishmen who are in the mob.

"Let's say a family wants to go to an amusement park, that's a good thing, you know. And at the amusement park there's these cinematic expressions. They're a new art form. It's something different from films that are shown normally in theaters, that's all."

I agree that cinemas should still be home to other movies and superhero fatigue can sit in, especially when there are so many coming out every year. You could argue that Marvel only releases two to three films a year but add DC, Sony's weird Marvel films, and the upcoming Valiant Cinematic Universe, it seems like superhero movies won't be leaving anytime soon.

Black Widow is the next Marvel movie, coming out on May 1, 2020.
