Steven Spielberg Says Nice Things About Superhero Movies After Recent Thrashings

Superhero movies might be more popular than ever but comments from directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have made fans a little ashamed for liking these kinds of films. Don't get us wrong, people are allowed to like and dislike Marvel and DC films but the way they thrashed these movies was pretty harsh. Thankfully, another acclaimed director has decided to say something nice about these kinds of films.

Recently speaking at the Cannes Film Festival (via GeekTyrant), Steven Spielberg has said some pretty nice things about some superhero movies. He's still not big on the superhero thing but the writer does like how some of these movies show you real heroes who are just ordinary dudes, despite their extraordinary abilities. He likes the Richard Donner Superman films and Christopher Reeves The Dark Knight trilogy but Spielberg also loves James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy.

"I love the Superman of Richard Donner, The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan, and the first Iron Man, but [the] superhero film that impressed me most is one that does not take itself too seriously: Guardians of the Galaxy. When his projection was over, I left with the feeling of having seen something new in movies, without any cynicism or fear of being dark when needed."

Once again, it's fine if you don't like these movies and there's nothing wrong with sharing your opinions about them. At the same time, it's also nice to hear some positive comments about a superhero movie after so many negative ones so let's applaud Spielberg for a bit.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently doesn't have a release date. The Suicide Squad is expected to come out on August 6, 2021.
