Mark Hamill’s Comments on 'Bittersweet' Episode IX Sparks Star Wars Debate

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may have been one of the most highly anticipated films of 2019, however, the third and final entry in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy easily became one of the most divisive entries in the Star Wars franchise.

Taking to Twitter to share his yearly "May the Force be with You" post with fans, Star Wars legend Mark Hamill decided to share his thoughts on Episode X, saying that The Rise of Skywalker ended up being "bittersweet."

"May The 9th Be A Bittersweet Episode," the actor wrote on his post, "Knowing It Was The Last Time I Would Ever Play Luke."

While most fans might see the post as a wistful look at The Rise of Skywalker as the culmination of the Skywalker saga, Hamill's tweet seems to have opened up a debate were fans fight over what the Star Wars legend really meant by "bittersweet."

Was Hamill mourning the end of the Skywalker saga or was he throwing shade at the troublesome Star Wars entry?

Sure, The Rise of Skywalker might have its fans, however, most viewers felt like the film relied too heavily on fan service, disregarding the value of cohesiveness in storytelling and creating multiple plotholes and issues within Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Fans felt like many of J.J. Abrams' storytelling decisions in The Rise of Skywalker were attempts at retconning the narrative choices made by Rian Johnson in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
