Mark Hamill Admits He Isn't Sure Why Luke Skywalker Gave Up In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

It's no secret that Mark Hamill was displeased with what happened to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. However, it looks like the real reason why the veteran actor was unhappy with his character's fate has to do with his own confusion with Episode VIII. Hamill has just revealed that he is unsure why Luke chose to become a grumpy old hermit.

A fan recently reached out to Hamill and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson on Twitter by asking why Luke gave up so easily after making "one mistake." The fan wrote that Luke's decision "doesn't make sense" and begged for an explanation. Check out Hamill's response below.

In The Last Jedi, Luke revealed to Rey that he almost killed his own nephew Ben Solo after sensing the Dark Side in the boy. Unfortunately, this led to Ben's rebellion and the destruction of Luke's Jedi Order. As a result, Luke decided to exile himself in Ahch-To, severed his connection to the Force, and became a grumpy old man who regularly drank green milk. It's a huge change from the optimistic young man we saw in the original trilogy, and Hamill is uncertain why Luke went downhill so quickly.

Although Hamill clearly disagreed with Johnson's decisions in The Last Jedi, we still admire him for voicing his concerns to the director and being a true professional. Still, we can't help but wonder how different things would have been in Johnson listened to Hamill.

Hamill will return in the still-untitled Star Wars: Episode IX, which is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.
