Margaret Atwood Says Star Wars Helped Inspire The 9/11 Bombings

It might sound a bit biased, but according to Margaret Atwood Star Wars actually helped inspire the terrorist behind the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

The critically-acclaimed author of The Handmaid's Tale just recently spoke with Variety as part of the magazine's Power of Women Luncheon on April 13, and during the interview with the publication, Atwood spoke about the Twin Tower bombings and how terrorists got the idea from Star Wars.

"Remember the first one? Two guys fly a plane in the middle of something and blow that up? The only difference is, in ‘Star Wars,' they get away," Atwood explained after being asked by the magazine whether she really believed that Star Wars had influenced the terrorists. "Right after 9/11, they hired a bunch of Hollywood screenwriters to tell them how the story might go next. Sci-fi writers are very good at this stuff, anticipating future events. They don't all come true, but there are interesting "what if" scenarios."

While the franchise has always featured the struggle between the Rebellion and the Empire (now the Resistance and the First Order), that doesn't necessarily mean that Star Wars: A New Hope was the direct inspiration for the 9/11 bombings.

Besides, Luke Skywalker doesn't fly his fighter right into the Death Star like the terrorists did with the Twin Towers – instead he shoots torpedoes straight into a vent. The parallelism between the two actually might seem weak.
