Henry Cavill's absence from the DC Extended Universe has a lot of fans worried about the actor's future in the divisive franchise. It seems like the British actor and Warner Bros. Pictures' working relationship has gone astray over the years and it's evident that the studio doesn't have any plans for him despite the fact that he was originally set to headline his own Man of Steel trilogy.

Unsurprisingly, fans have grown increasingly frustrated with WB's ways and if they had their things their way, they'd like to see Cavill play a superhero elsewhere. Turns out, the star of the hit Netflix series The Witcher isn't ready to give up his mantle as the DCEU's mighty Kryptonian amidst rumors of a Superman reboot and him potentially being recast.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, Cavill said that he's still optimistic about his Superman return and according to him,

"There is still a lot of storytelling for me to do as Superman, and I would absolutely love the opportunity. The killing of Zod gave a reason for the character never to kill again. Superman falling to the ground and screaming afterward — I don’t think that was originally in the script, but I wanted to show the pain he had. I did far more emotional takes they didn’t choose; tears were happening. He just killed the last remaining member of his species."

He added: "That’s the choice he made in that moment, and he’ll never do that again. There’s an opportunity for growth after that, to explore the psyche of Superman as a deep, seemingly invulnerable god-like being but with real feeling on the inside. As I always say, ‘The cape is still in the closet.’"

Warner Bros. and DC Films undeniably dropped the ball on Henry Cavill because to a lot of fans, he is already the definitive version of Superman. The least they could do is to make good on their promise of giving us the long-overdue Man of Steel 2 and it's just so frustrating how they're treating him. Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the powers that be will do the right thing and bring him back into the franchise.

Meanwhile, Henry Cavill is set to return as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher Season 2.
