Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Says Global Series is A One-Off Product

Wizards of the Coast

Last year, Wizards of the Coast released two Chinese-market-specific Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker Decks known as the Global Series: Jiang Yanggu and Mu Yanling, featuring two Planeswalkers and new cards themed around their story. With "Series" in the Planeswalker Decks' name, it's easy to assume that more similar themed decks will be released but according to Magic head designer Mark Rosewater, that's not the case.

When a fan asked Rosewater if we will get more products similar to the Global Series, Rosewater revealed on his Blogatog that the idea wasn't intended to be a part of an actual series. "The Global Series started because we were making an entry-level product for China and wanted the content available for others," Rosewater said.
"It wasn't intended necessarily as an ongoing thing."

While it would be cool to see more themed Planeswalker Decks like this, it's not surprising to see that they're discontinuing a product that didn't sell well.

The Global Series: Jiang Yanggu and Mu Yanling were originally designed by a team of Chinese artists, folklorists, and writers to explore a new branch of Magic lore rooted in Chinese aesthetics and mythology. It was released on June 22, 2018.
