Magic: The Gathering Arena is Getting Hundreds of New Cards For Historic Format

The upcoming Magic: The Gathering Jumpstart product will launch digitally on Magic: The Gathering Arena, and Wizards of the Coast has announced that all the cards from the new set will be part of the game's Historic format. That's a lot of new cards being added to the game's only eternal format, and that includes mostly reprints new to Arena and new cards first released in Jumpstart.

Wizards also announced that twenty of the Jumpstart cards from the tabletop version will not be added digitally as they are too powerful for the Historic format, and Wizards said that they are replacing them with other cards. Three of the cards they're replacing are Exhume, Scourge of Nel Toth, and Reanimate, and they will announce the rest in the July State of the Game.

There are currently around 3,000 cards legal in the Historic format, including every card ever added to the game since it was officially released last year. The addition of Jumpstart in Arena is the largest single influx of cards into Historic since its inception.

The thirty-seven new cards in Jumpstart will be legal in Historic but they will not be legal in Modern and Pioneer formats. However, are legal in other eternal formats not available in Arena such as Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.

Jumpstart is set to launch on Magic: The Gathering Arena on July 16, one day after the paper release of the product.
