Mads Mikkelsen on His Role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
Mikkelsen replaced Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore after allegations emerged that the latter physically and verbally abused his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
After Depp’s exit, director David Yates’ first choice was said to be Mikkelsen, per GQ Magazine.
At the time, after Depp lost his libel trial against The Sun and Warned Bros. pushed him to resign, there was an urgency to replace him overnight. From there, Mikkelsen entered the scene.

As he took on the role, Mikkelsen revealed his portrayal of Grindelwald as an “extension of Depp’s character, not a reset.”
He even likened it to his take of Anthony Hopkin’s Hannibal Lecter, saying, “To copy him would be creative suicide…We had to make it our own.”
He retained the “intellectual vanity” Depp injected into the character but made it more “respectable and empathetic,” bringing to life the “purely good” in him that Dumbledore (Jude Law) once saw.
With that said, it couldn’t be denied that Mikkelsen had perfectly portrayed the role of Grindelwald.
