Madonna has responded to the backlash over her unrecognizable look at the recent 2023 Grammys. In a post on Instagram Tuesday, February 7, the music icon shut down the claims over her appearance and age.
Madonna presented the controversial performance of Sam Smith and Kim Petras, the first transwoman to perform and win at the Grammys, of their hit song, “Unholy.” But instead of focusing on the show, she claimed people chose to talk about her looks.
Madonna Addressed Backlash Over Her Looks
In a lengthy post, the 64-year-old addressed the unwanted attention her look got at the award night.
“Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam and Kim- Many people chose to only talk about Close-up photos of me Taken with a long lens camera By a press photographer that Would distort anyone’s face!!” she wrote.

She then complained about the issues of ageism and misogyny that were thrown at her.
“Once again I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny That permeates the world we live in. A world that refuses to celebrate women pass [sic] the age of 45 And feels the need to punish her If she continues to be strong willed, hard-working and adventurous,” she continued.
Madonna Never Says Sorry for Her Creative Choices
Knowing herself, Madonna stressed she had never apologized for her creative choices, no matter how controversial they could be, from her dresses to her looks, and she had no plans to break that today.
“I have been degraded by the media since the beginning of my career but I understand that this is all a test and I am happy to do the trailblazing so that all the women behind me can have an easier time in the years to come,” she added, quoting Beyoncé’s hit song, “BREAK MY SOUL.”

That said, the music legend even looks forward to more controversies.
“I look forward to many more years of subversive behavior -pushing boundaries-Standing up to the patriarchy -and Most of all enjoying my life,” Madonna ended her note.
Her post comes with a behind-the-scenes clip of her Grammy appearance. She made rude gestures with Smith, posed with Cardi B, and tongue-kissed songwriter Jozzy.

Madonna’s post comes on the heels of people’s concern over her looks, saying they barely recognized her appearance at the Grammys.
