The new Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) film Madame Web is officially a box office flop following its six-day debut in theaters, breaking an unfortunate record for the franchise.

Prior to its release in theaters last Valentine's Day, it received an overwhelmingly negative reaction from critics. The Rotten Tomatoes score currently stands at 13% which is also a franchise low.

It doesn't help that it garnered a "C+" CinemaScore, indicating that the majority of the audience who watched on opening day were also lukewarm on the film.

Variety reported that Madame Web only grossed around $25.8 million across its six-day opening that started on Valentine's Day until the President's Day weekend.

If you count only the typical three-day weekend, it only grossed $17.6 million. It now has the worst box office opening ever for an SSU film.

The musical biopic Bob Marley: One Love ruled the six-day weekend as it opened to an impressive $51 million, which blew past expectations.

In comparison, Morbius opened to $39 million in its three-day opening, the first Venom film in 2018 earned $80.2 million, and its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage opened to $90 million despite being released at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The figures are disappointing considering that the film has a reported production budget of $80 million in addition to tens of millions more for its marketing and distribution costs.

Considering its dismal critics and audience score, it's not surprising for anyone to see the film becoming a box office flop and it is likely that the ticket sales won't improve in the coming days with the negative word-of-mouth that it's been receiving.

The film has also been the subject of memes and ridicule online ever since the trailer was released, which ignited further when it was released in theaters.

Now, all eyes are on whether the other SSU releases this year, Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3, will receive better box office numbers or end up garnering a similar performance as Madame Web.
