Mad Max Director George Miller Says Furiosa Could be New Villain After Fury Road

There is little doubt that Furiosa towered over Mad Max: Fury Road and somehow turned Max Rockatansky into her sidekick. After all, she was played by Charlize Theron and had a compelling story arc that left audiences spellbound. However, all these awesome things about Furiosa may not last very long. Director George Miller has just admitted that there is a huge possibility the Imperator will end up being the villain after the events in Fury Road.

Miller recently took part at New York Comic Con where the filmmaker revealed how Furiosa could become just like Immortan Joe.

"I've often thought about it. There are two ways to go," Miller said. "One is utopian, which is not an interesting story, really. I've somehow imagined that the first thing she would do in line with that, is go up and release the water…it wasn't withheld."

Miller continued by sharing the theories of literature professor Joseph Campbell that suggested how a good guy could end up going bad.

"Campbell said that the usual story is that today's hero becomes tomorrow's tyrant. The hero is the agent of change. They basically relinquish self-interest in order for some common good. [Campbell] basically says … you love what you've built, or saved, too much," Miller said.

"You become holdfast. You become the orthodoxy. You develop the dogma and basically then you have to protect it. That tends to be the rhythm of these things," he concluded.

It's an interesting idea that might not go over well with fans who believe strongly in Furiosa's potential as a good leader. Perhaps this could eventually be explored if Miller decides to work on a sequel to Fury Road where we could learn what happened to the character.
