Luke’s Backstory Is “Not Important To The Storyline” Of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars fans might be hoping that The Last Jedi's going to give them the answers to the questions that have been building up ever since the release of The Force Awakens, but Mark Hamill says that audiences shouldn't really expect any big reveals about Luke Skywalker's life between the original and sequel trilogies.

Sitting down to speak with Disney Insider about The Last Jedi, the Star Wars legend admitted that he had to make up some of Luke's backstory for The Force Awakens sequel.

"The biggest challenge for me was actually in the time between Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I had to know what had happened to Luke during those years. I had to glean decades of backstory from the script. And some of it I had to make up for myself. I had to know what he went through during that time."

According to Hamill, Luke's time between the first installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and Return of the Jedi won't be much of a factor in The Last Jedi.

"It's not important to the storyline for this film, but I did discuss some of my thoughts with Rian Johnson to make sure I wasn't coming up with anything in my personal backstory that would affect Luke's portrayal in this film."

This might sound a bit disappointing to fans, but it's understandable that The Last Jedi has to focus on its own story. Guess we might just have to wait on the books to learn more about Luke's time in between the sequel and original trilogy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 15, 2017.
