Luke Skywalker Sits On The Emperor's Throne In Epic Star Wars Image

At some point, Star Wars fans thought about what would have happened if Darth Vader was able to convince Luke Skywalker to join the dark side in Return of the Jedi. This idea isn't new outside of the canon lore, but now we have an image that could possibly be the closest we get to see it happening in the films.

Mark Hamill embodies the dark side in a behind-the-scenes photo shared on Reddit by user somebodypleasereply, where he is seen sitting on the Emperor's throne in his Luke Skywalker garb. He even has the menacing look down, which has a lot of fans revisiting those ideas of a Sith Luke who could have made quick work of the Emperor and Darth Vader to take over.

We have seen a glimpse of that in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back during Luke's training in Dagobah, where he sees a vision of himself wearing Darth Vader's mask. For a moment, we also see the dark side get the best of Luke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, where he tries to kill his own nephew Ben on the basis of a vision of his turn, which he inadvertently caused by such rash reaction. While a dark side Luke hasn't been fully realized in the films, the extended universe aka the non-canon actually explored the possibility. In Star Wars Legends, he did fall to the dark side albeit only for a moment. At some point, he even had to battle a clone of him that has an influence of the dark side.

What are the chances we'll be seeing something like this in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker? Well, the film will mark the comeback of Emperor Palpatine. The word is that this is a full-on resurrection rather than a flashback with speculations that Matt Smith's mystery role is somehow connected to this.

With Luke Skywalker already one with the Force, it might be unlikely that we get to see him confront the Emperor again. He seems to still be a presence in this film though and might serve as merely a guide to Rey and company in ultimately defeating the First Order.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release this December.
