Two months ago, George Lucas was revealed to have been disappointed with the sequel trilogy of the Star Wars franchise through Bob Iger's new book. Lucas' dissatisfaction was explained in detail, where it was revealed that he felt "upset" and "betrayed" in the process of making the sequel trilogy. And now, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shared her thoughts on what she thinks Lucas would've actually meant.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Kennedy responds to the issue regarding Lucas' disappointment towards the trilogy. She thinks that, since the franchise is essentially something fundamental to who Lucas really is, she feels that this was one of the reasons why Lucas found it difficult to let go.
She claims that J.J. Abrams came in with such enthusiasm in doing the project. Of course, every director has to make their movie something of their own, with their unique point of view, which Kennedy thinks is what Lucas is actually reacting to.
Kennedy pointed out that Lucas "appreciates the filmmaking" even though he would have not agreed with every choice Abrams and Rian Johnson made with their movies. She claims that Lucas continually tells her about how he is "astounded by how far things have come."
The Lucasfilm president even described Lucas "like a little kid" when he was on set of The Mandalorian. Because she saw how Lucas got caught up in the process again. However, she thinks, "there's a little bit of regret that he's not on the stage and directing movies and in it still."
Kennedy clarifies that she cannot speak on behalf of what Lucas is actually feeling all the time. But what she is sure about, is that Lucas is "very, very proud of what he created," and how people still enjoy the projects he has made.
