Lucasfilm Exec Debunks Darth Maul Involvement in Obi-Wan Kenobi

In case you missed it, there have been several reports confirming that Darth Maul was supposed to be the main antagonist in Obi-Wan Kenobi before Dave Feloni stepped in and pushed for Darth Vader to be the major villain. So is it true that Maul was the original bad guy in the Star Wars series? Lucasfilm Creative Executive Pablo Hidalgo has addressed the reports, claiming that it's all bantha fodder!

Star Wars fans recently had a field day after interesting new details about Obi-Wan Kenobi were revealed. According to several reports, the series needed a creative overhaul because the original script wasn't as exciting as expected. Interestingly, it was reported that the original plan involved Darth Maul as he pursues Kenobi and the young Luke Skywalker, and Ray Park had already been tapped to return as the villain. However, the idea was ultimately scrapped when Dave Filoni pushed for a different Sith Lord.

So is there any truth to these claims? Lucasfilm Creative Executive Pablo Hidalgo tweeted out his reaction to the reports and it somehow confirms that Darth Maul was never part of the original plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi.

It is a little disappointing considering that fans have been hoping to see Darth Maul's return in a Star Wars series for a long time now. However, it's also a bit of a relief considering that Maul's conflict with Kenobi has already been explored in the comic books and in the animated show Star Wars Rebels. With that in mind, people can expect something completely new later this year.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will bring back Star Wars prequel trilogy actors Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Joel Edgerton, and Bonnie Piesse. They will be joined by Rupert Friend, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine, and Rory Ross.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series premieres on Disney+ on May 25, 2022.
