Lucasfilm Aims to Produce Another Hit Disney+ Series After The Mandalorian With A Follow-Up to A Classic 1988 Film

Disney+ series Willow is currently negotiating with The Craft: Legacy actress Cailee Spaeny, Nocturnal Animals actress Ellie Bamber, and Solo actress Erin Kellyman for the three female leads of the series. The new series will serve as the follow-up to the 1988 dark fantasy movie of the same title.

Warwick Davis will reprise his titular role Willow Ufgood, an aspiring sorcerer, and Nelwyn dwarf. The Willow series pilot was written by Jonathan Kasdan who will also serve as the co-showrunner alongside Wendy Mericle. Jon Chu will be directing the pilot episode. The other people involved in the film are the original film's writer Bob Doman and film director Ron Howard, with Lucasfilm who produced the movie.

Here is the synopsis of the film:

Willow, a small farmer/apprentice magician, meets Madmartigan, a great swordsman, and together they journey through a war-torn land of magic and monsters, to save a baby princess from death at the hands of an evil queen who vows to destroy her.

The series will be Lucasfilm's first venture outside of the Star Wars since 2015. The Willow series will take place years after the events of the 1988 film. The Disney+ series will be introducing new characters from the enchanted realm of the two-headed Eborsisk monster and fairy queens, as well as the return of Willow Ufgood (Davis).

The members of the group will include Dove (Ellie Bamber) who has a similar backstory to Willow from the 1988 movie. Apparently, Dove is a kitchen maid who is the "chosen one" and embarks on a fantastical journey.

Kit (Cailee Spaeny) is the princess whose twin brother was kidnapped. She will join Bamber on a quest to save her brother. She is destined to become the queen. Jade (Erin Kellyman) is a servant and Kit's best friend. She is set to be the best warrior in the kingdom. The group will also have a guy who is similar to Val Kilmer's character in the movie. The character is a thief and a liar who joins the group in exchange for getting out of prison.

Disney+ Willow is set to film in Wales where the 1988 movie was filmed.
