Los Angeles Refuses to Reopen Theaters Despite State Allowing It

Several theaters are now open across the country as The New Mutants has finally premiered after an extremely long delay. However, there's at least one place where you won't be able to watch the X-Men spin-off film. Los Angeles is refusing to reopen cinemas although the state of California has revised its policies.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has recently announced the new policies that will allow movie theaters and other public businesses to reopen. The Californian counties have received one of four designations that would coincide with the current coronavirus outbreaks in the respective counties. For instance, purple indicates widespread cases, red means there is substantial cases, orange represents moderate cases and yellow indicates that there are minimal reports.

Interestingly, those in the red zone are allowed to open businesses. Since the Los Angeles County is between the purple and red zone, this should allow theaters to open. However, it was confirmed in a statement from the County Health Officer Order that they are choosing not to reopen cinemas just yet.

"Although the State today revised slightly the list of permitted activities in Tier 1 to allow for the re-opening of both hair salons for indoor services and indoor shopping centers for permitted retail establishments, the County Health Officer Order has not been changed to permit these re-openings," the statement reads.

The New Mutants is currently screening in theaters in the US and will be followed by Tenet, which is set to premiere on September 4.
