Lord of the Rings proved that it’s still hugely popular, enough that it reached the box office top 10 in the US this weekend. What makes this more impressive is that it achieved this feat with a limited re-release.

To be exact, the US box office top 10 chart over the weekend saw The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers in the eighth and ninth spots.

Even though it has been over two decades since the trilogy was initially released, the fact that they achieved box-office success again in a limited run might mean big things for the franchise moving forward.

Lord of the Rings 4K Re-Release is a US Box Office Hit Despite Limited Run

Back in April, it was announced that The Lord of the Rings trilogy would return to cinemas for just one weekend from June 8-10 in their 4K remastered versions.

Specifically, the Extended Editions of all three movies were screened in 1,529 cinemas across the US. Given the length of each movie though, only one screening of each movie per day happened.

Pretty much every fantasy fan has seen the trilogy at some point, though it seems that the 4K cinema re-release was still a hugely anticipated one as fans flocked to cinemas in droves to watch it.

In fact, even if there was only one screening in cinemas for each film, the first two movies in the trilogy cracked the box office top 10 as reported by ERC.

Of course, it helped that there wasn’t much in the way of big new releases this weekend, Still, the fact that only one screening per day for each film indicates the huge demand for it.

4K Cinema Re-Release Might Pave the Way for More Theatrical Runs

It’s fair to say based on its box office numbers that the re-release is a huge success. As such, it won’t be a surprise to see it get a wider theatrical re-release.

It helps that the 4K re-release makes the films look even better on the big screen, perfect for fans who weren’t able to watch the movies during their initial run.

The box office success also bodes well for future Lord of the Rings projects. After all, there’s an upcoming Gollum movie that’s in the works which will be directed by Andy Serkis, with Peter Jackson also on board to produce it.

As for The Hobbit trilogy, it’s not clear if those movies will also get the re-release treatment, especially considering they’re not as universally loved as the original trilogy.
