Logan Screenwriter Explains Film’s Surprise Villain

Sure James Mangold's Logan had its fair share of twists and surprises, however it seems like one of the most shocking developments in Hugh Jackman's final run as Wolverine was the introduction of an unexpected villain during the second half of the R-rated movie.

For fans who haven't seen the film and want to be kept spoiler free till they visit cinemas to see Wolverine hack away at his enemies' flesh, then you'd better head on out. All gone? Now, for those who've seen the film already, you probably remember the surprising appearance of X-24, Logan's "perfect" clone who's genes match up to the mutant's prime. Without any form of consciousness, the Transigen X-24 cuts his way through Professor X's (Patrick Stewart) body and later on becomes Logan's most difficult foe in the film.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Logan co-writer Scott Frank explains why the film needed to have X-24 as a villain.

"It was an interesting thing — for him to be confronted with himself. It reminds him of what he once was. He was not a good guy. But we didn't want to make a meal out of it. You have to be careful that that doesn't become the concept through the whole movie, because then it does exactly the opposite of what we were trying to do."

Frank is right when he says that the inclusion of X-24 could become distracting – personally it seemed a little bit off-putting to find the brutally strong clone present when Logan was busy dealing with the dying mutants and the grim reality that they had to face. But in a sense, X-24 helps emphasize what state Old Man Logan's body really is in and it doesn't really disrupt the flow of the general theme of the movie.

Logan is currently screening in cinemas.
