Leslye Headland’s Star Wars Series Said to be Martial Arts Thriller Set in Alternate Timeline

While it may have taken Marvel more than 20 movies before they even started teasing a concept of a multi-verse, it looks like Star Wars could be going that direction pretty soon.

According to Deadline (via The Ronin), Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland's upcoming Star Wars series will deal with an alternate timeline (that, and martial arts action). Here's what the site wrote:

"… Disney+ is developing a female-centered Star Wars series, written and showrun by Leslye Headland, believed to be a female-driven action thriller with martial arts elements and set in an alternate timeline from the usual Star Wars universe. The rumored spinoff is said to be separate from this Star Wars project but the situation is fluid."

While the closest thing we have to martial arts in Star Wars is Donnie Yen's fight scenes in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I guess it would be safe to assume that the story would focus on a Jedi, or at least someone who is proficient in using lightsabers.

Though the Sequel Trilogy had updated VFX, director J.J. Abrams had decided to forgo the heavily choreographed lightsaber battles from the Prequels to return back to the more clumsy and clunky duels of the Original Trilogy. With an emphasis on the ‘martial arts' element, hopefully Headland's series will come back to the Prequel style of lightsaber dueling—arguably one of the better elements from that trilogy.

We don't know when Lucasfilm plans to announce Headland's series, but hopefully we get a title reveal sometime in 2021. In the meantime, you can catch the second season of The Mandalorian now on Disney+.
