Besides The Mandalorian, Disney+ has a lot of other live-action Star Wars titles in development. One show has employed Russian Doll's Leslye Headland as showrunner, and though we don't know what it's about yet, Headland goes on to talk about her pitching process and where she wants to take her series.
Talking to Fantastic Frankey (via ComicBook), Headland explains how she started very specifically with the established worlds of Star Wars. She says, "It starts with 'Where are we?' because I think that is always how I anchor myself within this particular world. You can't just always just start with 'I have a cool emotional idea,' or 'I have a cool concept I'd like to explore.'"
Though Headland hasn't revealed any details about her series, she does make an emphasis on Star Wars geography, and it can be speculated that she would be developing a live-action Doctor Aphra series. In the comics, Aphra is kind of a scoundrel/archeologist, so she has an excuse for visiting foreign planets and looting treasure—kind of a female Indiana Jones in space.
Based on how Headland describes the series though, we could be looking at a whole new character. She further explains her Lucasfilm pitch:
"When I first pitched to Lucasfilm, I didn't necessarily pitch as a television show or a feature film, I just kind of pitched character or story and all the things that are dear to my heart as a playwright. I'm just pitching on that level… Ultimately when I settled on television and specifically streaming, it felt right because I feel that there's a different type of storytelling when you come from TV, especially episodic TV, meaning not bingeable TV."
We don't know when Lucasfilm will be ready to give us a look at this show, but hopefully we don't have to wait too long for a reveal. Fingers crossed we at least get a title by 2021.
For now, catch The Mandalorian Season 2 now streaming on Disney+.
