Leo DiCaprio In Talks To Produce Captain Planet Movie

Kids from the nineties may want to rejoice. One of the well-known and well-watched cartoons from our time may become a movie soon.

According to a new scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount and Appian Way Productions, a Leonardo DiCaprio-owned company, are reportedly teaming up to put Captain Planet and the rest of his Planeteers onto the big screen.

So far, the deal is supposedly already seeing the studio in talks regarding rights. There's already an eyed scriptwriter in Glen Powell (Scream Queens) and Jono Matt. If the deal pushes through, DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran may be producing the project. There's also the possibility that Powell may star in the movie.

Perhaps the most interesting about the new scoop is how the material will be treated. Instead of the Captain Planet who can save the day (and the Earth!), the source stated that the movie may open years after its 90s counterpart.

Instead of the always-smiling Captain Planet, he's now supposed to be a washed-up hero. This may be interesting, if only for the more realistic spin of how we now see environmental issues—a tomorrow's people problem, as some might say.

My only concern here is that they should give this treatment a fair spin. Those Planeteers may be a distant memory, but 90s kids like me have had their pick of the Planeteers—I've always liked Gi, because water—so each of those five Planeteers should be portrayed just right.
