Lawrence Kasdan and Joe Johnston Being Considered To Direct Han Solo Film

Everyone was shocked when news dropped that Phil Lord and Chris Miller had been fired from the Han Solo spinoff movie, and Lucasfilm is currently looking at a list of potential directors. Aside from the acclaimed Ron Howard being considered to helm, THR reports that Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston is also said to be in the mix, along with longtime Lucasfilm writer Lawrence Kasdan.

It would sort of make sense to have Kasdan taking over as director. After all, he did write the script and was heavily involved with previous Star Wars projects since The Empire Strikes Back. It was also reported that the reason Lord and Miller were pulled out was because Kasdan didn't like where they were taking the character.

Kasdan is said to prefer sticking the script, whereas Lord and Miller would prefer improvisation and comedy. THR's source said:

"People need to understand that Han Solo is not a comedic personality. He's sarcastic and selfish."

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure sarcasm falls under comedy.

Like I said earlier, Joe Johnston is also being considered to direct the movie. He has actually worked on the original trilogy before, being responsible for designs of the AT-ATs, TIE fighters, and even Boba Fett. Maybe it might come out as nitpicky, but since First Avenger was only an "okay" film for me, I would rather someone else take the helm. Is Gareth Edwards busy?

This is just my own personal opinion, but I really wished they let Lord and Miller do what they thought was best. The pair have a very good track run of movies, and even if Lawrence Kasdan takes over, I'm thinking that Lord and Miller's tastes would better attune Han Solo's character for the current generation of audiences.

We'll just have to see how all of this pans out.

Han Solo is set to hit theaters May 25, 2018.
