The third episode of The Last of Us continues to dominate the conversation online due to its heartfelt queer story in the midst of a post-apocalyptic world as well as its artistic elements such as the directing, writing, and performances of guest stars Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as Bill and Frank.
The song "Long, Long Time" by Linda Ronstadt (which is also the title of the episode) had a resurgence in music streaming platforms right after it aired as it topped the charts and garnered a huge increase in its streams similar to Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" during the fourth season of Stranger Things.
Now, Rondstadt has reacted to her song's popularity after the episode when she spoke recently with Billboard. The 76-year-old singer, who has retired as she is suffering from progressive supranuclear palsy, admitted that she is not familiar with the series and was only informed by its resurgence from her manager John Boylan.
"I don’t follow social media or streaming services very closely," she said.
However, the singer is happy with the newfound success of her song and expressed her enthusiasm for the songwriter Gary White, who will be receiving the windfall since she no longer owns the rights to her music catalog.
She added, "I still love the song and I’m very glad that Gary will get a windfall."
This is certainly an interesting situation since it follows the trend of an older song getting popular today after they were heavily featured in a popular TV series. It also happened recently with Wednesday when the song "Goo Goo Muck" by The Cramps was used for the titular character's dance scene.
It is great to hear that Ronstadt was able to appreciate her song's resurgence decades after the release of her song and this also speaks about the quality and artistic merit of her work since it was able to have an impact on today's generation.
